Measuring sliding glass, patio, or French doors for window treatments is similar to measuring your windows. Start by grabbing a measuring tape, pen, and paper - or use the measuring worksheet available on our website.
Since most doors have too shallow a depth for an inside mount, you'll follow the same steps as you would for measuring outside mount windows, beginning with the width.
French Doors
Measuring the Width
You’re going to take three measurements, one across the top, middle, and bottom of the door opening. Take the largest width and add at least 2 to 4 inches to it, allowing for maximum light coverage. Use this measurement for the width when ordering your door coverings.
Measuring the Height
Door heights are measured top to bottom, starting from where you’ll place the headrail, typically 2 to 3 inches above the window. Take your three measurements from the top of the frame to the bottom, on the left, middle and right, using the largest height for your order.
When measuring sliding doors for vertical blinds, use the smallest height, not the largest, and subtract half an inch to ensure they hang slightly above the floor.
Patio/Sliding Glass Doors
For an inside mount, measure like you would for a traditional window opening, but on a larger scale. Be sure to check the depth from the shallowest point in the window opening, which can be measured from the nearest obstruction, like a door handle.
For an outside mount, add 2 to 3 inches to the width and height to ensure it can be mounted above the sliding door’s opening and fully cover the space.
When measuring for vertical blinds on sliding doors, use the smallest height, not the largest, and subtract half an inch to ensure they hang slightly above the floor.
In most cases, our factory doesn't make adjustments to outside-mounted blinds, so they are sized to your exact measurements, plus or minus one-eighth of an inch.
